The Philosophy Department Started its journey from the session 1997-98 in 10+2 as well as in Degree level and simultaneously in 1997 the college authority appointed Mrs. Shanta Bhattacharjee as a lecturer in the Department. At the initial stage she single handedly tackled all the obstacle and barriers to run the Department because at that time students were not interested to study Logic. A small percentage of students took logic and philosophy as their one of the combination subject. But her relantless effort the students were passed out. Then in 1998 Mr. Krishna Saha joined in the Department but unfortunately after one year service he resigned. Next in 2nd August 1999 Mr. Sadhan Datta joined in the Department and till today he is serving the Department though one part timer is in the Department. Now, the Department witnesses a good no. of students. The Philosophy Dept. is running with the pass course only till 2022-23. No Honours courses are there. But from 2022-23 Four year Degree course has been implemented.
The Vision of the Department is that the students are Imparted the Philosophical Knowledge in such a way that they can better understand the Philosophical knowledge of the Vedic literature , Ancient Greek Philosophical knowledge, Contemporary western Philosophical thought and concept and Logical reasoning, its methods, principles and formulas. The knowledge will help the students to lead their practical life spiritual life.
In view of the Vision, the Department has taken different initiatives for all round development of the students. It is initiated that regular classes to be taken as far as possible. Though faculty member is not enough. Unit tests are to be conducted on regular basis. Assignment paper to be submitted by the students and for these topics to be properly distributed. After evaluation of unit test answer scripts have to be shown to the students and slow learners have to be taught by remedial teaching. The students are motivated through seminars, discussion etc. to impart the Philosophical wisdom of ancient and modern period.
