The Department of Economics was started with the establishment of the college in 1987. At the inception classes were started in S. P. Roy High School, Sonakhira. The department of Economics was started with its pioneer faculties Smt. Gita Kurmi and Deba Prasad Sinha. Subsequently Sri HaripadaDebnathwas appointed in the department as a lecturer in the year 1990 and he has been rendering his services as an Asst. Professor till date. At its initial stage the department had been offering higher secondary course. In the year 1991, the department was upgraded into degree college. Subsequently honors course was started in the year 2005.Here, it needs to be mentioned that most of the Alumni students have taken places in prominent positions both in academic and administrative as well as political sphere across the region.

The department is committed to the advancement of knowledge and learning in the field of economics. The department also envisions achieving high standards of academic performance to provide quality education to students and to deal with economic, social and business realities.

Mission:

The mission of the department is to provide, through both teaching and research, a better understanding of the global, national and local economic issues that will face our society now and in the future. In this backdrop we aim the following agenda:

• To provide our students with effective teaching;
• To provide our students with appropriate analytical skills to lay the groundwork for lifelong learning;
• To instill the path of intellectual transformation among undergraduate students;
• To make our students to understand microeconomic and macroeconomic concepts, environmental economics and their applications;
• To enable our students to become policy-literate and thus be more informed as citizens;
• To prepare our students for successful careers as applied economists, and
• To prepare our undergraduate studentspursue postgraduate courses in Economics, Master of Business Administration and other relevant fields.

Future Plan:

• The department is planning to organize a national level seminar
• The department is planning to organize workshops on econometrics and statistical tools to create a research mindset among the students of economics
• The department is planning to tea technology and management related studies in the curriculum along with research based works.
• The department is planning to introduce a departmental magazine which will help the students to some extent.
