The department of Bengali was started with the establishment of the college in 1987. At first classes were held in S. P. Roy High School, Sonakhira by Smt. Bijoya Chakraborty. Subsequently Sri Pradip Kumar Dey joint in the department of Bengali in the year 1990 and had been serving in the department till 2004. At its inception the department had been offering higher secondary course. In the year 1991, the Bengali department was upgraded into degree course. Subsequently major or honours course was started in the year 2005. The department of Bengali is dedicated to excellence in respect of teaching as well as service also. The department of Bengali has been offering foundation and broad understanding and discipline and to accord permission with greatest interest in all aspects that national and international level.

The Department strives to nurture excellence in teaching in the field of Bengali language and literary studies in particular and in the allied humanities disciplines in general with a view to making humanistic education speak to our times and climes.

In other words, it focuses on infusing a sense of social responsibility and community life among all its learners. The Department also works towards honing communicative-rhetorical skills, humanist aptitude, and cultural disposition through relevant interventions in Bengali language and literature studies.

The minimum criteria for admission should be 10+2 or Higher Secondary level passed students from any Govt. or recognized institution. For honours a candidate must have 60% aggregate marks in H.S. as well as in the concerned subject. In pass course candidates will be selected on merit basis.
Minimum required faculties are available in the Department to continue the course.
Departmental Meeting will be held every month to discuss the following academic and non-academic activities
Internal assessment conducted at the department level as per the University guide line. As per guidelines the scheme of the examination is divided as External and Internal Assessment. As a part of internal Assessment 30 Marks (20 marks internal and attendance 10 marks) and 70 marks are external examination are allotted out of 100 Marks. The systematic process is being laid down by the department to assess the marks. The internal marks to be uploaded in the University Examination Portal and student can cheek and verify the internals personally.
